Mining in Honduras: Geology, Minerals and Export Routes
KWE Metals Technical Team · · 6 min read
Honduras has centuries of mining history and a geology rich in gold, silver, zinc, lead, copper, iron and antimony. An overview for buyers sourcing from Central America.
Mining in Honduras goes back to the Spanish colonial period, when silver from the central highlands around Tegucigalpa was shipped to Spain. The country's capital itself grew as a mining town. Today mining is a smaller part of the economy than agriculture, but the country remains a producer of gold, zinc, lead and silver, with further potential in copper, iron ore and antimony.
Why the geology is favourable
Honduras sits on the Chortís block, an old continental fragment crossed by volcanic belts and major fault zones. Hot fluids moving along those faults deposited metals in veins and in replacement bodies within limestone. That history explains the range of material found across the country: epithermal gold-silver veins, lead-zinc-silver deposits, copper oxides such as malachite and azurite at surface, magnetite iron ore and stibnite (antimony sulphide) veins.
Main export routes
- Puerto Cortés on the Caribbean coast is the country's main deepwater container port, with direct services to the US Gulf and East Coast, Europe and Asia via transhipment.
- Puerto Castilla handles bulk and general cargo on the north coast.
- San Lorenzo on the Gulf of Fonseca gives Pacific access for shipments toward Asia and the US West Coast.
What buyers should check
- Valid concession and environmental permits for the mine supplying the material.
- Export documentation, including certificates of origin and assay certificates from an independent laboratory.
- Chain of custody from mine to port, particularly for gold, where refiners increasingly require documented provenance.
- Realistic lead times: bagged or containerised lots move faster than bulk vessel cargoes.
